LIONEL MESSI wins FIFA World Player of the Year Award. Young and attacking Argentine footballer Lionel Messi had won this year’s most sought after FIFA award-FIFA World Player of the Year Award.

In a glittering gala organized in Zurich yesterday (December 22), Messi was honoured with the coveted award in the presence of bigwigs from the world of sports, media, politics and cinema. It was a historic moment for the young striker; he is only the first Argentine to have been decorated with the prestigious award- FIFA World Player of the Year Award. This year his on field achievement also won him European Footballer of the year award.

Living legend of football Diego Maradona had often described Messi as one player who is close to his playing style. Brazilian Kaka has also showered praise on the striker who presently plays for leading club Barcelona, according to him “Messi is the greatest in contemporary times.”

The year 2009 had been outstanding for the Argentine Lionel Messi, he facilitated his club Barcelona in winning four top titles including Club World Cup and Champions League, besides, helping his national side in entering FIFA World Cup main draw, scheduled to be played in South Africa in the forthcoming year 2010.
