Default The best president ever - 11-26-2009, 09:01 PM

In the philippines, I consider Pres. Ramon Magsaysay as the best president we had. He became president in 1953 till he died in 1957 by plane crash. He was the most humble president. He was said be walking barefooted sometimes when he was walking along the road and does not have any body guard . but this was just personal story of my grandmother who saw this president once walking on one place. He was a very down to earth president and loved by all during his time.

Yeah Reagan was a very good president though he used to be a celebrity. Abraham Lincoln , i know he was a president of US but i don't have any idea on what Lincoln had contributed to USA though. i have not read much about him.

Thumbs up George Washington--first and best - 12-02-2009, 01:30 AM

Hands down, George Washington was greatest president in the history of the United States. As the first president, Washington had countless opportunities to abuse his power. However, respectfully he set precedents that limited the power of the Executive Branch. Washington's presidency was eight years worth of precedents which continue through today's legislation. He was the model for a president, and the greatest of all time.

George Washington was more than just a Cincinnatus of America. Washington was a respectable individual and countryman. Commander during the Revolutionary War, Washington showed his capabilities with military leadership. As a husband to Martha Washington, George was faithful and unlike almost every other president he did not have mistresses. Washington played a conservative president with high ideals and aspirations for our young country. While he never publicly freed slaves as Abraham Lincoln, Washington was the first wealthy white man to release his slaves (and is noted for treating them with high respect).

Opposing the previous posts about Abraham Lincoln as the best, I would like to quickly argue to differ. Abe Lincoln was not a great leader so much as a power-hungry politician, actor, and speech writer. No other president has ABUSED their power more than Lincoln, and very few resort to moral issues (slavery) to achieve public opinion. As stated by Richard Hofstadter, Abraham Lincoln was America's first true politician. He was more of an actor searching for power than a man of virtues and diligence. Lincoln did great things for change in the country, yet his decisions were an abuse of power and he expanded the Executive Branch in ways Washington once warned.

George Washington is #1. Abraham Lincoln should not be as high as most people assume.

Please also consider James Polk. While serving a short period, he did some great things.

There haven't been many good Presidents, seeing as every single one was either a racist, bigot, or corrupt. Although, looking at the context of their time, George Washington (as many have said) did an admirable job at guiding the formation of the government.

^ Bam. Circumstances led Lincoln to become a president and he was a good one. When he was inaugurated the South seceded from the Union and it was great challenge. Time went by and he fixed the problem. I b inspired.

@Colin - Washington did not set the precedent of 4 years... That was implemented in the Constitution. He was able to limit it to TWO TERMS (8 years) which was the precedent that has stayed and now is an Amendment to the Constitution.

@DaBirdmanCometh - American presidents are not always the best moral characters, but they have strong views that often reflect majority of the population. They are elected for a reason and therefore deserve the respect we give them. However, having strong morals is not necessary for a strong leader. Hilter is undoubtably one of the best leaders in history, however, he abused his power in the wrong way with little to no morals. Many of our presidents may seem as "racists" or "bigots," yet they were no more so than that of the American population.

@Everyone Else... use evidence to prove your selection. Don't just say "because they were first" or some lame validation. Let's get some real debate going...

I think Reagan was the US's best president, and Kennedy was a good one too. Not to sure about the most recent few (obama, bush v2, clinton, and bush v1). But you know, despite some stuff, I still support my president even though I don't agree with or believe a word he says.
